What is Islam?

Muslim's believe Islam is a “way of life”. The word ISLAM has a two-fold meaning: peace, and submission to God. This submission requires a fully conscious and willing effort to submit to the one Almighty God. This means to act on what Allah enjoins all of us to do in the Qur'an and what His beloved Prophet, Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) encouraged us to do in his lifestyle and sayings personifying the Qur'an.

Muslims believe that the only way to truly feel peace in our hearts is to submit totally to God and eliminate any pride, arrogance and hatred from within ourselves. Establishing peace in our hearts will bring about peace in our external conduct as well.

Islam is built upon 5 pillars:
Shahadah: Declaration of Faith in the oneness of Allah and the Prophethood of Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him)
Salah: 5 Daily Prayers
Zakah: Compulsory annual Charity
Sawm: Fasting in the month of Ramadan
Hajj: Pilgrimage to Makkah

Muslims believe in 6 articles of faith:
Belief in Allah
Belief in the Holy Scriptures (Torah, Bible, Psalms of David, Scrolls of Abraham and Moses and the Quran)
Belief in the Prophets
Belief in Angels
Belief in the Day of Judgement
Belief in Allah’s decree
